Pink Eye in Children: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

Small children can be prone to red, irritated eyes, most commonly known as pink eye or conjunctivitis. New parents should be on the lookout for pink eye in children to prevent and/or treat this infection if it appears, and avoid long-lasting damage.

Of course first-time parents should avoid paranoia and be careful not to diagnose the symptoms incorrectly. Babies are prone to eye discharge while sleeping, thus waking up to sediment. Gentle massages in the corner of the eye can improve that problem.

Pink Eye Symptoms and Causes

The main symptoms are red, watery eyes that leak white mucus. In more advanced cases, it could even be yellow or green. If that happens, consult a doctor immediately! If you fail to treat conjunctivitis, it could lead to permanent damage for your child.

Not all cases are caused by the same thing. Newborns are susceptible to infection during their journey through the birth canal. Once past the newborn stage, there are three types of possible causes: viral, bacterial or allergen.

  • Viral conjunctivitis is usually paired with other symptoms that usually correspond to a cold. This type of strain is the most common in infant children.
  • Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by a bacterial infection. Since children often play on the floor and are around other babies, they are prone to getting dirty. By keeping your child’s hands as clean as possible, you might prevent this type of infection.
  • Allergies are not an infection, necessarily. If your baby is allergic to pollen, dust or smoke, his or her eyes might start to run. Sadly, in many cases, it could be allergies to a household pet! A friend of mine gave birth to Veronica, a beautiful baby girl. At about 8 months old, they started to notice allergy symptoms. After a while, they realized that she was allergic to the lint and dust that the cat picked up when he went behind the sofa or other nooks and crannies of the house. The cat had to go, but soon after, Veronica’s allergies cleared right up.

Treatments for Pink Eye

Prevention is important. As I said before, try to wash the baby’s hands as often as possible. They often tend to rub their eyes when they are tired and cry, so if they have dirt and soil on their hands, they are more at risk to an infection of some sort.

If you notice signs of viral conjunctivitis, try boiling water to disinfect it, wait for it to cool, and then clean the discharge out of your baby’s eyes using gauze.

However, the safest way to cure pink eye is going to see the doctor for a proper diagnosis. He will know what to do, whether it be simple eye drops or antibiotics of some sort. Avoid home remedies because that could make things worse!
